Am I TOO YOUNG? How could this happen to me? Why me? Did I do
anything to provoke this? Why, why, why ?
My first year of college, I was 18 and at the very end of my semester I got sick. It was after Christmas and before New Year’s Eve when I received my first scare. I had a stomach virus and was throwing up all night & did not feel well at all. I knew something wasn’t right, my body didn’t feel right & I tried to sleep it off. In the morning I didn’t feel well at all & I knew something was wrong with my heart. I went to the doctor & she automatically sent me straight to the hospital and called it in. My heart was beating rapidly and fluttering uncontrollably btwn 120-200bpm– I had to stay overnight. They said the cause was probably dehydration which to me is mind boggling. I was assigned a cardiologist and went for various stress tests and also had 24 hour heart monitors placed on me. It does not feel too good being surrounded by elders and thinking
“I am too young for this.” (I have my whole life ahead of me) All the Echocardiogram’s and EKG`s came out normal or didn’t really cause any alarm. Then I had another doctor diagnose me with atrial tachycardia and said that I may have an electrical heart problem, etc. my point is that you are never too young.
Now recently, I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure at the
tender age of 22. I sometimes don’t know how to cope with all that has been thrown my way but what I take from this experience is that you are never too young to take care of your heart – cardiac issues do not only involve the elderly and this may not always be a hereditary issue in order for you to be effected.
My own experiences along with some stories I have heard give me strength and hope: it has given me inspiration to join the cause & do my first Heart Walk at Jones Beach Sunday September 22,2013.
I really want to do everything possible to combat this ordeal … Walk for a cause, raise awareness and RAISE some money!
“Imagine the impact if we reduce death and disability from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20% by 2020! I’m joining the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk to promote physical activity to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Please support me in helping to reach this lifesaving goal by giving a donation today! Thanks in advance for your support.”
ALL DONATIONS MAY BE MADE DIRECTLY THROUGH MY DONATION PAGE OR YOU CAN SEND A PERSONAL CHECK/MONEY ORDER TO THE LOCAL LONG ISLAND, PLAINVIEW OFFICE. ( In honor of me – Evelyn Ortiz) . I know that the online donation page refers you to print a donation form and informs you to send the check to a Texas P.O. Box but that is the international American Heart Assoc. & the event I am participating in is for the Long Island Walk.
